Computers @ Your Library

WiFiThe Rye Public Library offers free Internet and database access to residents and visitors of all ages. The Library also offers WiFi access, so bring your laptop or use one of ours.

We offer a variety of computer classes, with new ones added each month. We welcome suggestions for other classes that you would be interested in attending. Please call us at 964-8401 or email us at tech@ryepubliclibrary.org.

Thursday Tech Talks are lectures and demos with some hands-on work as time permits. A few laptop computers running Windows XP will be available, and participants may also bring their own.

Monday morning Computer Tutor Drop-In sessions are hands-on, using one of the Library's Windows XP laptops, or you are welcome to bring your own.

No pre-registration is required for Monday morning Computer Tutor Drop-In or Thursday Tech Talks.

Class Descriptions

Computer Basics, Part 1 : Overview of the components of a computer, elements of the Windows operating system, including: using the mouse and keyboard, highlighting, copying, and pasting text, common menus, toolbars, and shortcuts, exploring programs and documents, overview of computer hardware and storage media.

Internet Basics : Getting online, understanding basic terminology, toolbar buttons in Firefox, using search sites, evaluating Web sites and online information, using intermediate and advanced online tools and search features. Keeping your computer safe and secure on the Web.

Email Basics : Open, compose, send, forward, reply, and delete email. Adding people to your address book, attaching photos, and opening attachments that people send to you. Protecting yourself from spam, phishing, and other scams.

If you already have an email account that you can reach when away from your home computer, please bring the web address for your email, your username, and your password. Instead of creating a new email account, we will use your existing account.

If you do not already have an email account, come to the Monday morning Drop-In session or make an appointment with the Technology Librarian for a one-on-one session and we'll set up a new account for you.

Downloadable Audiobooks : Learn how to use the library's downloadable audiobook service including: how to search through the library's collection of downloadable audiobooks, how to check one out and download it to your computer, and how to transfer it to your MP3 player/iPod or burn it to a CD

Introduction to Word 2007 : The basics of word processing, including: styling fonts, changing paragraph styles, changing indentation, changing line and paragraph spacing, setting margins, inserting line and page breaks, inserting headers and footers. Word processing on the Web--using Google Docs or Zoho--will also be covered.

Introduction to Excel 2007 : Basics of spreadsheets, including: cells, rows and columns, text, numbers, formulas, formatting cells, selecting cells, sum, average, max, min, count, pmt, and fill down. Using spreadsheets on the Web with Google Docs or Zoho will also be covered.

 

Free Software and Services on the Web: Office productivity software, image processing software, anti-virus protection, and other basic tools can end up costing as much or more than your computer hardware. Find out about free (and safe!) software that you can download and install on your own computer, or use on the Web.

It's Not All On Google! An Introduction To On-Line Research: An overview of the Library's numerous subscription databases, including resources for Books, Periodicals & Other Materials, Business, Education, Encyclopedias, Geographical Data, Genealogy, History & Biography, Health Resources, Magazines & General Reference, Newspapers, and Professional Development.


Monday Morning Drop-In and Individual Tutorials: Are you having trouble getting past one particular hurdle? Are you just getting started with computers and need a helping hand? Spend up to 30 minutes with the Technology Librarian on a specific problem or need-to-know issue in Word, Excel, Publisher, Powerpoint, email, downloadable audiobooks, scanning, going wireless, using the printer, doing research, using the Library's databases, and anything else that's on your mind. These are not classes, but group and one-on-one sessions about specific questions regarding specific applications, operating system functions, or Web services. Please call or stop by to make an appointment, or just drop in on Monday mornings.
