Review by Susan C.
Excellent journalistic book by the author of The Perfect Storm. His research and details are enlightening. The documentation of soldiers in an outpost in Afghanistan is a page-turner.

Review by Barbara G. 4 Stars! I’m a fan of the Lord Peter Wimsey series and thoroughly enjoyed this completion of Sayers’ last novel, unfinished at the time of her death. Paton Walsh has gone on to write two more Wimsey books in the Sayers style. State of Wonder: a novel, by Ann Patchett 5 Stars! After all the positive reviews, this book does not disappoint. Patchett is, in short, an amazing story-teller. She creates characters, puts them in some kind of isolation – then sees what they do! Review by Jill H. 5 Stars! Loved this book! Takes place in the Amazon. Did not want the story to end. I miss the characters. Ann Patchett made me feel the heat of the jungle and the buzz of the insects. Open: an Autobiography, by Andre Agassi I enjoyed this book because it was such an interesting insight into the life of a professional tennis player. Learning about Andre’s side of stories was also interesting. I would recommend it to anyone interested in tennis. 4 stars! One Was a Soldier, by Julia Spencer-Fleming Excellent mystery. The characters are mostly returning veterans of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam. I don’t want to spoil the plot, but if you like war mysteries you will enjoy this. At first the bad guys have everything on their side, but justice prevails. 4 stars! I loved the author’s music and the story of his rise to fame from poverty. 3 stars!
Knowing Your Value: Women, Money, and Getting What You’re Worth, by Mika Brzezinski [audiobook] This story was an eye-opener for me. We still do not have equal pay or even just pay for women in the work force. This book offers a lot of help to women in their 30s and 40s to “ask for a raise” based on quality of work. Interesting leading women give their strategies. 4 stars! The Fifth Witness : a novel, by Michael Connelly Another great Lincoln Lawyer book. There are so many plot twists, it will leave you dizzy. Soon to be a major motion picture, I bet! 4 stars!
Every Last Cuckoo : a novel, by Kate Maloy Set in Vermont. Widowed Sarah begins to rebuild her life by taking in “cuckoos”–”birds” from other nests, all in need of nurture. 4 stars! Biography of an amazing woman who lived “many lives”–all through the French Revolution. Great overview of the French and the lives–complicated– of the nobility of that era. 4 stars! |
