Find out more about this exciting show at the Portland Museum of Art on view at the museum from February 23 through May 28, 2012, featuring compelling works by Edgar Degas from a private
collection . These incredible paintings have never been exhibited together publicly. Join Associate Curator of European Art for the PMA, Margaret Burgess as she discusses the design, compilation and exhibition of this incredible first with regional accessibility! Margaret Burgess was named to her position in 2010, and is responsible for overseeing the presentation and development of the museum’s collection of 19th- and 20th-century European art. Prior to her work at PMA, Burgess was most recently a research fellow at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. She has also held positions at Buckingham Palace, London; the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, England; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, Italy; and the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. In presenting this outstanding program, The Friends of the Rye Public Library continue with their 2012 speakers series which highlights the expertise and exhibitions offered by the many regional museums and cultural institutions to which the Friends support Rye Public Library memberships, allowing the Library to loan passes to our members for reduced or waived entry fees. We invite you to take full advantage of this extraordinary opportunity offered by your RPL membership (free to Rye residents) and attend this program before borrowing our PMA pass– available at RPL through the Friends of RPL!

Join us for a timely evening of Irish music and tale with Irish Balladeer Paul Carroll. Renowned Dublin minstrel Paul Carroll will recall the lush green fields of Ireland to prepare us for Saint Patrick’s Day. Don’t miss this special performance at the Rye Public Library! Paul grew up in Dublin during the ballad boom of the sixties where the pubs were packed with folk singers and ballad groups. It is there that he found a love for the music and songs that were to be part of his life. He credits his mother for giving him the gift of song. She was a fine singer in her own right and he remembers fondly the “hooleys” in the house. Paul emigrated to Australia in the early 70’s but he never strayed very far from the music, singing in the folk clubs of Sydney, Perth and Melbourne. During his time in Melbourne he was a founding member of the Celtic band, Poteen, who were Australia’s premiere Celtic band, sharing the stage with icons like Eric Bogle, The Dubliners, The Fury’s and Boys of the Lough.

She has a Culinary Arts Degree and is a qualified teacher. London and Switzerland were her training grounds and she has a reasonable fluency in French and Spanish, plus smattering of Dutch, German, Italian and Lithuanian. Having traveled extensively throughout Europe, she has an eclectic view of different cultures and cuisines that she incorporates into her catering service and classes where her students love to hear her stories. People love her down to earth, common sense attitude and approach. She has called Merrimack, NH home, with her husband and son, since September 1987. Oonagh divides her time between teaching Adult International Cooking classes as well as providing a gourmet Catering Service and regularly appearing on the local ABC TV station. The “Cooking with Oonagh” show is now in its second season on local cable TV stations. Oonagh offers Gourmet, International, Super Bowl fare and Grandma’s comfort food for her client’s delight. Everything is from scratch, made to order, with all real ingredients – not a packet mix in sight! Everyone raves about Oonagh’s food after rediscovering what food should taste like. Recipes are alive and change with available ingredients. They grow and expand.

Seacoast Science Center President Wendy Lull takes you on a tour of 400 years of Odiorne Point history. You’ll learn of the daring 17th century proposition that proved to investors that Europeans could survive a New England winter—and turn a profit. Follow the genteel transition from fine farms to finer estates until the abrupt taking of property to protect the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during WWII. After the war, and the failed citizen’s attempt to get their land back, Odiorne Point became a state park. You’ll hear how one feisty lady challenged the plans to develop the park for recreation, and in so doing, laid the foundation for the Seacoast Science Center and park you see today. She’ll end with a quick tour of the Center with a hint of the new whale exhibit opening this May.

This program is another in a series sponsored by the Friends of the Rye Public Library to share regional highlights while publicizing their museum pass support at the Library. Remember Seacoast Science Center passes are available at RPL through the Friends of RPL!

Wendy Lull is President of the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, New Hampshire. A former marine biologist and owner of a marketing and graphic design firm, Wendy has been at the Center’s helm since it opened in 1992. She earned her Master’s Degree in Zoology at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). A SCUBA diver and kayaker, Wendy has published scientific papers, business strategy cases and edited the book Footprints in Time. She leads Center expeditions to locales of environmental and historic interest from the Gulf of Maine to the Galapagos Islands.

Here’s what Wendy has to say :

Is it possible to convey everyting that has happened at Odiorne and SSC in 45 minutes? I’ll give it my best shot next Sunday, 2:00 at the Rye Public Library (flier attached).

The talk is free, but seating is limited and it is suggested that you come around 1:30 to get a seat–room holds about 60 people. I hope you’ll be able to join me–and I suspect some will be able to add some stories and/or correct some of mine! We have been building a good relationship with the Library this year, and this is one of the results. We’ll be hosting their star gazing program here next month.

Hope to see you there–

–
Wendy W. Lull
President
